A New Year and a New Start -- It's Time to Tidy Up the Warehouse

Tidy Warehouse

A more tidy warehouse, along with the right janitorial and housekeeping equipment, can help improve your overall warehouse efficiency and organization and can help make sure your new year gets off on the right foot. Here are some of the best ways you and your warehouse personnel can work to make the warehouse clean, organized, and productive at the start of the new year:

Create cleaning goals

Establish a schedule for cleaning your warehouse throughout the year. Set clear expectations for each area, department, and individual that include both daily and less frequent tasks. It’s important to make sure everyone keeps workspaces clean on a continuous basis, never leaving messes for others to clean up. All personnel should be given a personalized set of cleaning goals to follow each day throughout the new year. Daily cleaning and organizing will ensure that the less frequent cleaning tasks will take less time and resources to complete. Make sure all personnel understand their specific cleaning responsibilities. Accountability is key to sustained cleanliness.

Stock appropriate cleaning supplies

Keep stock of all cleaning supplies for all areas of your warehouse and regularly monitor the stock levels. It will be easier to keep to your new cleaning schedule if supplies are always on hand and easily accessible. Also, make sure that the supplies you stock are up to the tasks you need them for – don’t keep a carpet sweeper if a Shop-Vac® is what you really need.

Encourage proper waste disposal

Place plenty of waste and recycling bins around the warehouse and inform all personnel of the proper waste disposal protocol. This will help keep trash off the warehouse floor and in its proper place, which tidies all workspaces and increases overall safety. In addition, empty these bins regularly to prevent them from overflowing.

Cut down on clutter

At any warehouse, it's easy to let clutter pile up. However, clutter takes up valuable space and collects dust. The start of the new year is the perfect time to declutter the warehouse. Rotate older, usable stock to the front and dispose of any obsolete or unnecessary stock. Take this time to evaluate all tools, equipment, and fixtures as well. Keep only the items necessary for peak productivity. Repair any items that could be returned to service and scrap the rest. Additionally, set the expectation with your personnel that all items should be properly stored at the end of each task and/or shift.

Remember that a tidy workspace is a more efficient workspace and there’s no better way to start a new year than with a neatly organized and cleaned warehouse. Have any other warehouse cleaning tips? Share all your thoughts and questions with us in the comments below.
