Choosing Commercial Trash Cans: Cascade ICON or STERLING Series?
Commercial trash cans might not be the most exciting purchase, but they play an essential role in keeping your facility productive and clean.
To that end, you’ll need waste management products that are suited to your operation. Solus Group provides two excellent options: The Cascade ICON and Cascade STERLING series.
While both trash cans are designed for commercial and industrial applications, they’re not identical — and you’ll need to consider your facility’s waste management process when making your purchase. Below, we’ll provide some tips for choosing the right option.
Commercial Trash Can Basics: Identifying Your Needs
Waste management begins with a careful measurement of your facility’s current output. Some questions to consider:
- What types of waste does your facility create (trash, recycling, hazardous waste, documents, etc.)?
- Will containers need to be watertight?
- Will you need to customize waste containers with logos or graphics?
Cascade’s roll-out carts can be customized to meet the needs of virtually any facility. However, the STERLING series is slightly slimmer and has an integrated silver lift bar. The ICON series also features a lift bar, which must be installed onsite.
Both the ICON and STERLING series feature:
- Lid options including latches, document destruction lids, and recycling lids.
- Durable construction with injection-molded High Density Polyethylene (HDPE).
- Tough snap-lock wheels or optional rubber wheels, which improve traction while limiting floor scuffs.
- Customized graphics for the lid and body are available on request.
- A variety of standard color options.
- ANSI compliance.
- Size options ranging from 32-96 gallons.
- Rugged RFID tags are standard on every cart.
Additionally, both models are 100% recyclable and can be used with commercial waste management equipment such as Bin Dumpers.

Choosing Between Cascade ICON and Cascade STERLING Roll-Out Carts
Because the STERLING series has a slimmer profile, bulk deliveries require fewer shipments. The ICON series also requires installation of the lift bar.
The STERLING series also features a more watertight design. The integrated lift bar is fully sealed, which prevents moisture from leaking out of the cart. While this can be mitigated by using high-quality liners, the STERLING series is preferable for handling wet waste.
While the STERLING lift bar is factory integrated into a double-wall lower lift pocket, it’s also easily replaceable if the bar sustains damage. In other words, the STERLING series is still an option for heavy-duty applications — and its slim design navigates easily through narrow areas.

Find the Right Roll-Out Carts for Your Operation
Overall, both of Cascade’s residential carts provide reliable service, and custom options can help you outfit your carts for your facility’s needs. For bulk waste management, the STERLING series is a worthy upgrade — but the ICON series has earned its reputation as a durable workhorse.
