According to a report published by Recycling.com, 33% of schools offer some form of composting. For comparison, 63% of sampled schools had established recycling programs.

Composting reduces the cost of waste disposal. It’s better for the environment — and the compost itself is a valuable product. Why, then, aren’t colleges and universities composting? 

A 2022 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health identifies the most common barriers:

  • Lack of infrastructure: Composting bins are large, dense, and difficult to move safely. They also have special storage requirements due to odor (as anyone who’s worked around large bins full of organic material can attest).
  • Lack of knowledge: Inadequate training for students and kitchen staff on how to separate waste. That leads to non-compostable trash mixing into organic bins, contaminating the product.
  • Inconsistent tracking: Fragmented data methods that make it difficult to measure waste or justify program costs.
