What PPE Kit Should I Get?
Employers have a responsibility to provide their workers with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). And while you can certainly buy PPE individually, PPE kits make outfitting much easier.
Solus Group carries a variety of kits, designed to meet OSHA/ANSI regulations. Below, we’ll discuss the different categories of PPE kits available and provide some essential tips for purchasing.
What Is a PPE Kit (And Why Do I Need One)?Â
A PPE kit is a pre-packaged collection of personal protective equipment designed to address specific hazards in a given environment. They streamline the process of acquiring necessary safety gear and help to ensure that all essential items are readily available.Â
If you’re concerned about compliance, PPE kits can help. OSHA generally requires PPE to meet the standards developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). By collecting all of the essential ANSI-compliant equipment in one package, kits can reduce employers' legal liability.
Of course, you can also purchase PPE items individually. Piecemeal collection is preferable when accommodating specialized needs. For example, you might buy items individually if you need to meet specific sizing requirements or accommodate an employee’s allergies — or if you’re using certain types of PPE more frequently.Â
Examples of individual PPE include:
You may also buy PPE individually when picking up bulk sorbents (such as AcidSorb) and other spill cleanup supplies. For more, view our full selection of industrial spill response kits and supplies.
What PPE Kit Should I Buy?
Solus Group carries a range of PPE kits intended for specific applications (including in the battery room). Here’s an overview of the most popular kits.
For General Use: Standard Personal Protective Kit
The Personal Protective Kit is designed to safeguard workers from hazardous substances, particularly during forklift battery maintenance. It includes essential protective gear like a face shield, goggles, apron, HAZ-MAT boots, and neoprene gloves to provide comprehensive coverage when working with potentially hazardous chemicals.
This all-in-one PPE kit aids in compliance with OSHA regulations by minimizing exposure to battery acid and other dangerous materials. All components are conveniently stored in a protective bag, ensuring accessibility and organization.
For Spill Response: Universal Spill Kit
The Universal Spill Kit provides a comprehensive solution for containing and cleaning up various types of industrial chemicals, from small leaks to large-scale spills. Available in multiple sizes and configurations, it’s designed for diverse applications such as vehicle spills, laboratory use, and industrial settings.
Standard kits include a variety of sorbent materials like pads, socks, pillows, and loose sorbent, along with disposal bags and personal protective equipment.
For Chemical Hazards: PPE Deluxe Kit
The PPE Deluxe Kit enhances standard personal protection by combining essential safety gear with full-body coverage. It includes a disposable face shield, safety glasses, nitrile gloves, a chemical coverall, a disposable apron, and latex overboots.
The PPE Deluxe Kit is suitable for environments with higher exposure risks, as the addition of the chemical coverall ensures that the entire body is shielded from hazards.Â
For Basic, Quick PPE: Basic Personal Protection Kit
The Basic Personal Protection Kit offers essential, disposable safety items for simple protection. It includes safety goggles, nitrile gloves, a disposable apron, and Tyvek shoe covers. It provides a basic barrier against contaminants and splashes, so it’s appropriate for situations requiring quick and easy personal protection.Â
Suitable for short-term use or environments with low-risk hazards, the Basic Personal Protection Kit is an affordable option for improving compliance.
For Acid Spills: AcidSafe Spill KitsÂ
The AcidSafe Spill Kits are specifically designed to neutralize and absorb acid spills (excluding hydrofluoric acid).Â
The AcidSafe sorbent features a three-stage indicator, which provides a visible color change to confirm complete neutralization. Available in multiple configurations, including mini kits, wall-mounted cabinets, and pail or drum-based kits; all options include AcidSafe sorbent, personal protective equipment, and clean-up tools.
For Outfitting Battery Room Technicians: AcidSafe Tool Box Battery Cleaning and Maintenance Kit
The AcidSafe Tool Box Battery Cleaning and Maintenance Kit is a specialized kit designed for safe battery maintenance and acid spill cleanup.
It includes AcidSafe sorbent for neutralizing spills (excluding hydrofluoric acid), AcidSafe Battery Wash for cleaning corrosion, and a standard PPE kit for personal protection.
The kit also provides tools like a mini-broom, dustpan, scraper, and scrub brush, all housed in a durable toolbox. An instruction card is included to guide users through proper battery maintenance.
For Organic Cleanup: FluidLoc Multi-Use Bloodborne Pathogen Spill Clean-Up Kit
The FluidLoc Multi-Use Bloodborne Pathogen Spill Clean-Up Kit is engineered for the safe and effective management of blood and bodily fluid spills, mitigating the risk of exposure to infectious materials.Â
The included sorbent instantly gels and encapsulates body fluids, preventing further contamination. FluidLoc's impressive absorbency allows it to soak up to 150 times its weight in liquid. The Industrial Kit (8505) contains shaker bottles, PPE, antibacterial wipes, surface spray, absorbent pads and biohazard disposal bags.
PPE Checklist: Make Sure Your Operation is Ready for Inspection
Use this checklist to make sure that you’re providing enough protection for your employees — and documenting your work for safety inspections.
- A documented hazard assessment has been completed.
- All workplace hazards have been identified and listed.
- Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) has been selected to match each identified hazard.
- PPE fits employees correctly and is in good condition, with no damage.
- PPE is readily available and adequately stocked. Purchase at least 20% more PPE than you’d reasonably need for spill cleanup and have a plan to purchase replacement supplies.
- Consistent enforcement of PPE usage is in place among all employees.
- Training has been provided to all employees on relevant PPE and hazards.
- Training covers the purpose, use, maintenance, and storage of PPE.
- Hands-on training has been provided for practical application of PPE.
- Training sessions are documented with dates, names, topics, and signatures.
- Refresher training is scheduled and conducted regularly to maintain compliance.
- OSHA posters are up to date and accessible.
- OSHA 300 logs and other required records are being kept.
