Automotive Material Handling Solutions for OEMs and Tier 1 Suppliers

The global market for automotive components has been unpredictable over the past decade — or even chaotic, depending on your placement on the supply chain. Nevertheless, automotive component demand is still growing at an estimated 3.5% per year, per Boston Consulting Group.

Automotive Material Handling Solutions for OEMs and Tier 1 Suppliers

For OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, the challenge is meeting that demand while staying competitive on pricing and reasonably flexible on production. That’s a tall order, but the right material handling equipment (MHE) can help suppliers effectively meet those (very different) goals.

Solus Group’s sales teams have worked with automotive suppliers to find solutions that drive value. Here’s an overview of common MHE that provides an excellent return on investment in the automotive supply industry, along with key considerations for buyers.

Material Handling Equipment for OEM/Tier 1 Suppliers

A passenger vehicle contains about 30,000 individual parts, and suppliers act as a logistical funnel for hundreds (or, conceivably, thousands) of those components. There’s a tremendous amount of coordination at play — and real-world challenges like limited floorspace, inventory tracking, and damage prevention.

MHE can’t solve every issue, but the right solutions can certainly make a difference.

Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors

Forklifts aren’t efficient for managing vertical storage, while traditional freight elevators carry high maintenance costs. Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRCs) are an excellent, low-maintenance alternative for making the most out of limited floorspace.

VRCs eliminate forklift lanes between building levels, reclaiming valuable floor space for actual manufacturing. Integrated velocity fuses and gate sensors lock the lift carriage instantly if hydraulic pressure drops or if gates are left unclosed, protecting high-value components from destructive drops.

Solus Group carries two basic models:

  • Mechanical Straddle VRC (VRC-MS): Engineered for continuous-duty industrial environments, handles loads ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 lb at travel speeds of 28 feet per minute. A synchronized motor and chain drive system eliminates hydraulic fluid maintenance risks.
  • Hydraulic Cantilever VRC (VRC-HC): Offers a space-saving footprint with a lifting capacity up to 6,000 lb and a travel speed of 21 feet per minute. The cantilever design allows for flexible C, Z, or 90-degree loading patterns in tight layouts.

Tugger Carts

Maintaining a Lean manufacturing flow requires Tier 1 suppliers to deliver materials to the main assembly line exactly just-in-time. Forklift traffic creates severe safety hazards in congested aisles, and moving single loads manually wastes time.

Solus Group offers specialized heavy-duty industrial Tugger Carts that hitch together to create high-volume material handling trains pulled by a single utility vehicle. Tugger systems allow operators to transport multiple wheeled loads of parts in a single run.

The result: Less traffic without a loss in throughput. Options include:

  • Quad-Steer Tugger Carts (TT-QS): Synchronized all-wheel steering axles turn in tandem to eliminate snaking, even around tight corners.
  • Center-Steer Tugger Carts (TT-CS): Built with a centrally located fifth wheel, these carts pivot directly within their own footprint for enhanced maneuverability.
  • Dual-Steer Tugger Carts (TT-DS): Two front swivel casters and two fixed rear casters offer an even balance between steady tracking behind a tow vehicle and easy manual control when unhitched at a station.

Tugger carts can be configured with specialized shelving, angled trays for improved part retention, or open steel platforms to transport bulky component bins directly to assembly workers.

Mother-Daughter Carts

For complex Just-in-Sequence (JIS) replenishment runs where specific part profiles must be distributed across multiple distinct workstations, traditional bulk carts aren’t really an option.

Mother-Daughter Carts provide a modular solution for multi-stop delivery routes. The system consists of a tuggable, train-ready mother frame that remains securely attached to the main tow line, and independent nested daughter carts that ride within the frame.

Because daughter carts can be custom-built for highly specific component kits — such as dedicated wire harness bins, instrument fasteners, or small trim molds — Tier 1 suppliers can maintain a continuous, fluid loop of materials without breaking the pace of the delivery vehicle.

Panel Carts

Automotive manufacturing requires the constant transport of large, flat, and fragile vulnerable materials such as sheet metal stamping blanks, heavy glass windshield profiles, fiberglass sound insulation panels, and oversized plastic trim components. Manually carrying these awkward, heavy sheets introduces severe musculoskeletal strain; standard flat furniture dollies lack the vertical frame support to keep the load balanced.

Panel Carts solve this bottleneck by supporting large sheet materials vertically, keeping the load's center of gravity close to the heavy-duty steel frame.

The heavy-duty BHS Panel Cart (PC) features a carpeted plywood deck to protect delicate, high-value surfaces — such as polished sheet metal panels or pre-treated composite materials. Built with a rugged, powder-coated steel frame and heavy-duty casters, PC carts are rated for a 1,000 lb (454 kg) load capacity to manage heavy stacks of metal or glass paneling safely.
