Box Dumper Buyer's Guide
A box dumper (also called a bin tipper, bin dumper, gaylord dumper, tote dumper, or bulk box dumper) can deliver a fast return on investment — as long as you choose a product that's optimized for the way your business works.
Solus Group carries a range of box dumpers designed for long-term, heavy duty use. Each is engineered to handle a wide range of bulk materials, providing an ergonomic way to dump boxes and bins at height. In this article, we'll discuss some of the key factors to consider when matching box dumpers to your material handling process.

Choosing Box Dumpers: Key Factors
When choosing any type of material handling equipment, it's important to consider the flow of material. Some questions to keep in mind:
- What types of materials are you handling regularly?
- What is the average (or ideal) weight of the load?
- What’s an appropriate maximum container height?
- Will the bin dumper need to be moved regularly?
- How frequently will the box dumper operate?
A basic assessment of your needs will help you avoid buyer’s remorse — there’s a significant difference between a mobile, manual-powered bin tipper and a heavy-duty hydraulic unit.
Bin Dumper Features
In virtually all applications, you’ll want material handling products made from high-quality steel. Other industrial materials are available, but heavy-duty welded steel construction provides the best combination of durability, capacity, and minimal maintenance.
The primary differences between units include:
- Power Type: Manual tote dumpers are ideal for emptying roll-out carts, while hydraulic box dumpers are better suited for large garbage bins, bulk materials, and other heavy loads. Hydraulic actuators require minimal maintenance and allow for efficient material handling.
- Load Capacity: Consider both the standard duty cycle and the full capacity. Duty cycle is particularly important for units that will remain in continuous use.
- Tip Height: Make sure your tote dumper has sufficient discharge height and an appropriate degree of dump angle when unloading materials. Solus Group’s units have a range of standard tipping heights ranging as high as 33 feet (10 meters) for the MegaDumper®.
- Special Considerations: Tote dumpers are available with bolt-down lugs (for fixed dumping), water resistance (up to IP56), food-safe materials, splash protection (to prevent operators from being exposed to potentially hazardous materials), and more. If you’re planning on using a unit to handle awkward materials or handling hazardous substances, reach out to our sales team to discuss options.
Below, we’ll provide a quick overview of each Bin Dumper and provide tips for choosing between various box dumper models.
Products to Consider: Bin and Tote Dumpers
Ezi-MT® Manual Bin Dumper
The Ezi-MT® Manual Bin Dumper alleviates ergonomic risks associated with dumping roll-out bins, efficiently lifting and tipping loads up to 143 pounds with a manual winch. A 59-inch tipping height safely raises bins from ground to dumpster lip, and its lift-and-tip action ensures stability by keeping weight within the unit's footprint. Ideal for various settings like small businesses, offices, and schools, it features a heavy-duty manual winch to eliminate ergonomic hazards.
The dumper accommodates common 16-64 gallon waste bins with its standard cradle, and custom cradles are available for non-standard bins. Constructed from steel with a powder-coated frame and zinc-plated components, it's weatherproof for indoor/outdoor use.
Dockmaster® Hydraulic Bin Dumper
Designed for safely tipping bins and drums from a raised loading dock, the Dockmaster hydraulic dumper limits tipping height to 27.5 inches for quick, ergonomic dumping. With a maximum weight capacity of up to 550 pounds, this hydraulic tote dumper features a closed electro-hydraulic system, safety bars. The standard model is compatible with common wheelie bins from 24 to 96 gallons.
Optional features include auto-cycle operation, bin hooks, bolt down kit, custom controls, digital scales, and stainless-steel construction. Custom cradles are also available to accommodate different types of containers.
MegaDumper® Hydraulic Bin Dumper
The MegaDumper® is a mobile solution for dumping large bins, handling up to 1,323 pounds and 290 gallons. Its heavy-duty hydraulics and electric power enable tipping heights over 33 feet, suitable for industrial use. A locking loading door ensures operator safety. Compatible with most industrial containers, it offers custom cradles for specialized needs.
Power options include 3-phase, battery, or solar, with battery units featuring an integrated charger. The design ensures stability, with heavy-duty casters and brakes for mobility. A galvanized frame and weatherproof controls allow indoor/outdoor use, and safety features include a key switch and digital battery indicator.
Mobile Gaylord Dumper
Mobile Gaylord Dumpers (GLD) provide a comprehensive solution for handling Gaylord containers and pallet-sized bins. An adjustable restraint bar secures various container sizes during dumping. Designed specifically for Gaylord containers, these dumpers come in 2,000-pound and 4,000-pound capacity models.
Both feature rugged steel construction with an impact- and chemical-resistant powder coating for durability. These Gaylord dumpers efficiently tilt and empty containers, with adjustable restraints for all Gaylord sizes, including D and E.
The robust construction and powder coating resist damage, while braided wire hydraulic lines enhance longevity. A closed hydraulic circuit minimizes maintenance, while simple, push-button controls facilitate easy operation. Custom builds are available.
Multi-Tip® Hydraulic Bin Dumper
The Multi-Tip Hydraulic Bin Dumper enhances safety and productivity by emptying loaded bins up to 330 pounds. Its unique lift-and-tip action maintains weight distribution over the unit's footprint, ensuring stability throughout the dumping process. With a standard cradle compatible with most 24 to 96-gallon roll-out bins, it's ideal for various settings, including offices, factories, and recycling centers. Choose from tipping heights of 47, 63, or 71 inches to match existing equipment.
The Multi-Tip hydraulic box dumper efficiently empties bins in just 15 seconds, handling up to 5,500 pounds of material per charge. It features onboard battery power, electro-hydraulic operation, and a durable steel construction with a chemical-resistant powder coat and galvanized components for indoor/outdoor use.
Heavy-duty casters and dual brakes provide mobility and stability, while integrated fork pockets allow for easy transfer via lift truck or pallet jack.
Tilt Cart Dumper
The Tilt Cart Dumper (TCD) eliminates ergonomic strain and fall risks associated with manually emptying tilt carts from docks or platforms, enhancing operational efficiency. It maintains truck stability within its footprint during tilting. Expanded steel, powder-coated barriers and double rear-loading doors provide full enclosure for safety.
With a 750-pound capacity, it's suitable for industrial waste handling and high-volume material dumping. The TCD safely empties tilt trucks into ground-level dumpsters, featuring dual floor locks for stability and fixed truck restraints for easy loading.
Forward Bin Tipper
Not sure you’re ready to invest in a dedicated bin dumper? The Forward Bin Tipper (FBT1000-760) converts forklifts into portable bin dumpers for cubic, pallet, and megabins. Its hydraulic system provides fast, controlled dumping, and it's easily installed by the operator. Gentle on bins, it handles various plastic or timber bins with a clearview design and secure bin grab.
A 135-degree rotation ensures complete emptying, with minimal impact on forklift capacity. A safety catch prevents improper dumping. Durable construction and low-maintenance bearings ensure long-term operation. It handles up to 2205 pounds and fits standard forklift tines, accommodating 48-inch by 48-inch bins.
